When I started this article, it was intended to talk about how Gen X women were changing the off-roading community.
When in fact its Off-roading that is changing GenX women.
Introduction
As I lay on the ground beneath my rig looking for possible loose nuts, bolts, leaks, anything I might’ve overlooked on the millionth time I’d double checked everything. I faded off into my own thoughts and had an epiphany,

It was so quiet, no kids fussing, no one wanting dinner, no one complaining, just silence.
It was at that moment I realized something had shifted in my universe. No one needed me.
My job was completed. I’d raised my babies and now my babies have babies. I did it. I put amazing, wonderful humans into this world now my work was done. All I’ve ever known is being a mom, a caregiver, a wife.
Sure, I had a career which I grew too old for and handed off to the next generation.
Now, all that I have is boxes marked Keepsakes.
I'm lying there thinking I have no fucking clue who I am. I couldn't even remember who I was before my family, my tribe. That stung to say the least.
I lay there and felt myself starting to breathe heavily and before I knew it, I was having my very first full-on anxiety attack. Once I was able to calm myself down, I rolled out from under my rig, I stood there looking at my girl Feral. She is and has always been a symbol of resilience in my eyes. I touched her hood and said out loud. We might be old Feral, but we aren't done yet, we have a lot of life still left in us.
Deciding at that moment that this part of my life is a new chapter that I get to write it.
In my search for a new direction, the jeep community would become a lifeline during a time of profound self-reflection.
This isn't just a personal journey; it's a shared narrative among many GenX women. Countless women driving Jeeps are finding their way back to themselves, discovering their confidence, and creating bonds that strengthen their spirits.
We are reclaiming our lives and writing our new chapters together.
I interviewed several women from the off-roading community. Initially, I intended to focus on how GenX women are changing the demographics of off-roading, this turned out to be just the opposite.
The experiences of the GenX Jeep Gals are both humbling and inspiring, highlighting their resilience and determination to confidently shape their next chapters on their own terms. These women, regardless of their backgrounds, shared that their Jeeps have given them strength, courage, self-confidence and a sense of belonging.
This story isn't just about the GenX Jeep Girls—it's about Jeep Girls everywhere.
Breaking Stereotypes and Embracing Inclusivity
For decades, off-roading has been perceived as a male-dominated sport. However, the increasing presence of women is gradually dismantling these stereotypes. These trailblazers bring a fresh dynamic to the community, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and diverse perspectives. Their involvement is a testament to the belief that adventure knows no age or gender.
Unique Skills and Perspectives
Off-Roading women are bringing a wealth of experience, resilience, and intuition to the off-roading arena. Their life experiences have honed their decision-making skills, enabling them to navigate challenges with a calm and calculated approach.
Karen, a seasoned off-roader in her 50s, shares, "Each trail is a lesson, and every obstacle is an opportunity to grow.”
Personal Anecdotes and Success Stories
The stories of these women are as diverse as the trails they conquer. Take, for instance, Dawn, who started off-roading in her 50s. Despite initial doubts and challenges, she soon became a respected figure in the community, known for her strategic thinking and fearless attitude. "Off-roading has taught me more about myself than I ever imagined,"
Patricia reflects. "It's not just about the thrill; it's about the journey, the friendships, and the victories, big and small."
Dawn (North Carolina), Age 55, (Off-Roading since 2020)

My very first question to Dawn was about how she discovered the off-roading community. Her response, brimming with heartfelt memories and profound emotion, as she talked, she explained to me that she had a pivotal moment, when she realized that she had more years behind her than ahead of her and wanted to make the most of them. Owning a Jeep had always been a childhood dream, and in 2020 she finally made that dream come true.
Dawn said that her Jeep and the off-roading community have transformed her life in indescribable ways; I could sense her emotion over the phone as she became choked up. She spoke of feelings of belonging and how her experiences have built her self-esteem and confidence to unimaginable levels.
I asked what she thought she would be doing at 55 if she were not part of the off-roading community, she sighed deeply and replied, “Growing old, sitting here alone in my house.” Her words were poignant, underscoring the significance of her sigh before answering.
She explained that the forest was more therapeutic for her past trauma and anxiety than any drug. The off-roading lifestyle has given her peace and healing she might never have achieved otherwise.
I concluded our interview by asking her what advice would she give to women thinking about joining the off-roading community. Dawn responded, "Go for it. You'll be challenged in ways you never imagined," emphasizing that personal limitations will be surpassed.
Dawn is dedicated to helping women new to off-roading. She is an inspiration and embodies the Jeep Girl Spirit.
Karen (Florida) Age 56 (Off-Roading since 2019)

Karen purchased a Toyota Tacoma 4x4 in 2019, allowing her and her husband to explore the dirt roads and the Ocala Forest area. She mentioned the practical need for a truck to haul her mower, but it quickly became much more than that. As they ventured deeper into the forest, they fell in love with the rich history and beauty of the surrounding land. This newfound passion led her to purchase a Jeep in August 2021 to delve even deeper into the wilderness.
During this period, Karen and her husband were also adjusting to life as empty nesters. Karen was battling depression and severe anxiety, feelings exacerbated by a sense of losing her identity. The off-roading community and her adventures in the forest became a crucial part of her journey towards mental well-being. The experiences she shared with her husband and the profound connection to nature brought her a sense of peace and purpose that she had been yearning for.
Karen was emotional as she tried explaining to me how her Jeep has changed her life. She even included that her Jeep and the adventures have brought her and her husband even closer. They just celebrated their 37th year together, and Karen proudly giggles when she talks about sneaking out of the house to the forest where they might do some forest "frolicking." Karen and her husband are incredibly adorable, and their love for one another is truly a fairytale.
My last question to Karen was asking her if she could describe to me what exactly changed for her that she can directly accredit to her Jeep. She explained that it gave her a new life, a new purpose, confidence, and self-esteem. Most of all, the peace in her core she only gets in the forest with her Jeep. She spoke of the serenity and empowerment she feels while navigating challenging terrains, the sense of accomplishment after each successful journey, and the unspoken bond she shares with her Jeep. It’s not just a vehicle to her; it’s a symbol of her resilience and determination, a testament to the trials she has overcome.
Karen is now not only living her best life in the forest of Ocala; she has created her own well-known Jeep club. She has also become a Trail Angel for the hiking community and a beloved Trail Boss, leading thousands of off-roaders through the Ocala National Forest. Her journey from battling inner turmoil to inspiring many is nothing short of remarkable.
Karen's growth and tenacity are nothing short of amazing and continue to serve as a beacon for all off roaders, particularly for all Jeep Girls. Her unwavering determination and resilience shine through her every endeavor, proving that with the right mindset, one can overcome any obstacle. Karen's story is a testament to the transformative power of embracing new challenges and finding your true passion.

Through the community, she discovered a side of herself that allowed her to be unapologetically authentic. She described the sensation of being in her Jeep as embodying an alter ego, infusing her with confidence and empowerment, enabling her to achieve feats she never thought possible.

Jessica (Tennessee) age 39 lifelong Jeeper

Jessica has enjoyed off-roading her entire life, coming from a family of off-roading enthusiasts. The youngest of the ladies I spoke to, she was incredibly gracious and heartfelt as she shared her story. Born into a family deeply rooted in Jeep culture, Jessica's earliest and most cherished memories are of her in the garage with her father, who patiently taught her the intricacies of Jeep mechanics. These precious moments not only forged a strong bond between them but also instilled in her a sense of confidence and self-reliance that has profoundly shaped her as an adult.
Despite her remarkable skills and experiences, Jessica opened up about her struggles with reclusiveness and the anxiety that accompanies social interactions with strangers. The thought of being in public would often cause her to retreat further into solitude. Yet, through her involvement in the side-by-side world with her supportive husband, Jessica nurtured a dream of someday owning her own Jeep. This dream blossomed into reality in April 2024, marking a turning point in her life. With heartfelt emotion, she admits that her beloved Jeep has not only been a vehicle of adventure but also a source of newfound joy and transformation.
Jessica enthusiastically shared with me how she has become an unstoppable force in the Jeep community. She radiates joy and excitement when talking about Jeeps, and her transformation is nothing short of extraordinary. She feels incredibly blessed to own a Jeep and to be part of the Jeep community, which has profoundly enriched her life. Her newfound confidence and self-esteem has inspired her to embrace life and to seize every moment with passion and purpose.
Only after I hung up the phone from talking with Jessica did I realize my cheeks were aching from smiling. Her enthusiasm and joy is contagious. Jessica is all heart and embraces the true essence of being a Jeep Girl!
